Five police officers are dead today and seven injured officers have been released from the hospital after snipers opened fire in Dallas last night during a protest. One of the deceased officers, Brent Thompson, had recently married within the last few weeks.
The Dallas police Chief David Brown says three suspects are in custody. Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings said on MSNBC this morning that a fourth suspect died after officers confronted him in a downtown garage. Chief Brown said this morning said that the dead suspect stated he was upset about police shootings and that he wanted to kill white people, particularly white police officers.
The Dallas demonstration was prompted by fatal shootings of African American men within two days of each other. In Minnesota, Philando Castile was fatally shot by a police officer Wednesday evening during a traffic stop. Castile’s girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, who was in the vehicle Live streamed video on Facebook from the site of the shooting in the St. Paul suburb of Falcon Heights. In the video she says to the officer, “You shot four bullets into him, sir. He was just getting his license and registration, sir.”
In Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Tuesday evening 37 year-old Alton Sterling was fatally shot outside a convenience store. Portions of the interchange with police was also captured on video and broadcast on television and social media.
At a news conference this morning, Mayor Rawlings said a criminal investigation is underway. He declined to provide details about suspects in custody.
