Do you want to reduce your risk of health problems? If so, you should start walking!
Dr. Vivek Murthy, the 19th Surgeon General today launched the “Step It Up” campaign to highlight the benefits of walking.
Here’s what he had to say: “We know that an average of 22 minutes a day of physical activity – such as
brisk walking – can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes.”
The Surgeon General acknowledges that not all communities are walkable.
In fact, a 2013 study found that nearly one-third of Americans say there are no sidewalks in their neighborhood.
That’s why Dr. Murthy is calling on community planners to include sidewalks, curb cuts, crosswalks, safe crossings for the visually impaired and more green spaces in neighborhoods across the United States.
Studies show that a sedentary lifestyle contributes to heart and lung disease, diabetes and cancer, which account for 86 percent of our nation’s health care costs.
So, what are you waiting for? Get walking!
That’s the Lowdown!
